Main Event: Crossing Canada by canoe in the footsteps of the fur traders
Canadian Voyageurs - spring 2015
Leaving from Rocky Mountain House Alberta Canada in a 17 foot canoe loaded with all our gear and our food (re-supplies on the way) to Lachine Quebec.
The expedition is over 5000 kilometers of wilderness paddling with over 300 kilometers of portaging our canoe and gear over rugged terrain.
We will be documenting our journey and stopping at key destinations along the way.
Our route:
We are leaving NOrdegg - one day's paddle from Rocky Mountain House in April - dates will be posted as soon we know - it will depend on the winter we have this year. As with any wilderness expedition, we expect the unexpected and take things as they come. We will end our trip in Lachine Quebec. The reason we are leaving from Vancouver is because we don't feel like portaging 50 kilometres over the Rocky Mountains! And the reason we don't want to paddle to Moncton is because the St. Laurence is full of very large ships and places to camp and stop along the way are rare.
Our route is outlined in YELLOW on the map below/
Summer 2014:
Promotion, gear preparation, planning and trip preparations. We have purchased most of our gear - including our Dumoine Swift Kevlar Expedition canoe.
We have worked at promoting ourselves and gaining followers on social media. We created a new chat called #mywildCanada - it's a weekly chat on Twitter. It's turned out to be a huge success - we have attracted organizations like Outdoor Research, Canadian Geographic, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Inreach Canada - as hosts - our participants can win prizes - see the website: www.mywildCanada.com
WISH LIST
We still require or would like the following items:
-
skirt for canoe to keep our gear dry
-
more GoPro cameras - we have one - we would like at least two more - several would be awesome!
-
memory cards - we are shooting hours and hours of video - we need lots of memory cards
-
GPS communications - we need an InReach or similar communication device capable of two way texting and posting to social media
-
We have a canoe - but it's a very expensive canoe - if we could have a canoe donated in the west, we would not have to transport our canoe which would save a lot of money and we would like to donate the Canadian Voyageurs Expdetiion canoe to a museum or to an organization (with all the sponsors' logos on it - at the end of our journey)
